Region information.

Akagera National Park protects a revived savannah mosaic of open plains, acacia woodland, papyrus swamps, and rolling hills along Rwanda’s eastern border. Conservation with African Parks has restored lion and both black and white rhino, alongside elephant, buffalo, leopard, hippo, crocodile, Masai giraffe, topi, and Defassa waterbuck. Birders can search for shoebill in the marshes when conditions align. Park rules permit day and night drives on set routes, plus boating and fishing on Lake Rwanyakazinga. Landscapes are varied, distances modest, and guiding standards strong, making unhurried safaris feel easy. Birding is excellent year-round.
