Day 5 - 9 - Bisate Lodge, Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

Bisate is located in the natural amphitheater of an eroded volcanic cone and has dramatic views of the peaks of the volcanoes, Bisoke and Karisimbi, rearing up through the Afro-alpine forests of nearby Volcanoes National Park. Volcanoes National Park is situated in northwestern Rwanda. It covers 160 km² of rainforest and encompasses five of the eight volcanoes in the Virunga Mountains, namely Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo. It is home to the mountain gorilla, golden monkey and was the base for primatologist Dian Fossey. Vegetation in the reserve varies considerably from montane forest to bamboo forests providing for a unique fauna and flora adventure.
The excitement preceding gorilla trekking is something to be experienced to be believed. Sometimes it can be hard work trekking through the rain forest to find a group of habituated gorillas and then sometimes the group can be found within an hour. Safe distances are maintained, and visitors are spoilt by getting close up to families, getting on with their daily foraging and being privileged to enjoy observing their social behaviour. Encountering the silverback or leader of the family group is an experience of a lifetime.
