Region information.
South Luangwa National Park spans about 9,050 km², a wild valley nicknamed the Valley of the Leopard for prolific predator action. The Luangwa River and oxbow lagoons support around 60 mammal and 450 bird species. This is the birthplace of the walking safari; guided walks and guided night drives complement daytime game viewing. Luwi sits deep inside the park on its namesake sand river, wonderfully remote. Access is typically a ~2.5-hour game-drive transfer from Mfuwe International Airport. Dry months concentrate wildlife at water; early summer brings green foliage and migrant birds.
