A private night on a raised, open air platform or star bed with proper bedding, lanterns and radio contact. Your guide escorts you at dusk and remains on call while you sleep beneath the Milky Way.

Desert skies in Namibia, delta and lagoon views in Botswana, wildlife-rich pans and rivers in Zimbabwe and South Africa, and Kenyan high-country decks. We match regions to season, access and comfort level.

Is it safe and comfortable?

Yes. Platforms are raised and staffed, with mosquito nets and clear procedures. Warm duvets, hot water bottles and hot drinks keep nights cosy. Minimum ages and weather policies apply by camp.

When should I plan it?

Dry months bring clearer skies. For the darkest nights we plan near the new moon and align with your wider route so logistics and stargazing both work.

Layers for cool nights, a beanie and a head torch with red light. If photographing the sky, bring a wide-angle lens, tripod and remote. We share a concise checklist with your booking.

Open air sleepouts bring you closer to wild Africa in a way that feels both adventurous and carefully managed. In Zambia, Time and Tide’s Luwi, Nsolo and Kakuli offer simple star beds or light fly camp setups with real duvets, warm drinks and a support team nearby. In Zimbabwe, Somalisa Sleep Out places a raised platform within earshot of Hwange’s waterholes, while Mana Pools can add seasonal sleepouts as part of a wider itinerary. South Africa’s Simbavati Waterside has a private deck above the dam, and the Mvubu Cottage experience can include a lantern lit night under the sky.

In Kenya, Loisaba Star Beds wheel out four posters onto rustic decks for open sky views. Setups vary, yet all share safe distances, radios, mosquito nets and a guide within reach.
